Unknown (unused) devices in device manager
In the device manager you will only see com one (under PORTS) and the modem (under Modem), If there is an UNKNOWN DEVICE called PCI communication device or serial communication device or Here's the problem: The modem does not show up in Device Manager, the Com2 port also does not show up in Device Manager.

Point it to the MSDV.inf file in the INF directory within Windows (you'll be sorted (the device should now show up under imaging devices) though I'd throw the patch back on again afterwards just to be sure you havent ended up

On the next cold start of the computer, the device manager shows NO mouse entry, only an "Unknown device" with yellow/black exclamation mark under the USB devices (not mouse device).

USB Unkown Device
It simply showed up as an "Unknown Device" in Device Manager under the USB connections. If I un-plugged the reader and plugged it back in to the new USB port, it would show up fine until the next reboot, and then it was back to "Unknown Device." Not a big deal for a work-around, but I really didn't like the hassle.

Drivers
I booted up in The Safe Mode yesterday to run defrag and before I ran it I looked in Device Manager. I forgot about this until now. I found an Unknown Device. I tried to remove it, but I never went back in Safe Mode to check and see if it was gone. It doesn't show up in Regular Mode. I reckon I will check when I go

Or better yet, if you look in the device manager under hard disk controllers, does it mention esdi, or anything strange? They show up in the BIOS but Windows just doesn't see them... For some, unknown device shows up in normal mode (device manager) which leaves the option to disable it from that profile. That doesn't seem to apply in your case.
